President Guebuza arrives for African Union Summit

Addis Ababa, 27 Jan (AIM) – Mozambican President Armando Guebuza arrived in Addis Ababa on Friday night to attend the heads of state summit of the African Union, scheduled for Sunday and Monday.

He is accompanied by Foreign Minister Oldemiro Baloi, the Minister of Planning and Development, Aiuba Cuereneia, and the Minister of Industry and Trade, Armando Inroga.

On Saturday President Guebuza is due to take part in the 16th summit of the Forum of Heads of State and Government of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM). The APRM is a mechanism that AU member states join voluntarily, in order to monitor political, economic and corporate governance.

Following this summit, the AU heads of state will inaugurate the new AU Conference and Office complex, donated to the AU by the Chinese government.

The main theme for the summit itself is “Boosting Intra-African Trade” – but this has become overshadowed by the contest for chairperson of the African Union Commission, in which South African Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, backed by the whole Southern African Development Community (SADC), is challenging the incumbent, Jean Ping of Gabon. This is certainly the most closely fought election in the African Union’s history.
